Please urge the New York State Attorney General's office to invoke
the New York State Anti-Cruelty Law to stop the illegal practice of
force feeding ducks and geese to produce foie gras. Foie gras is
produced by forcing tubes down the restrained birds' throats several
times a day to grossly enlarge their livers to be turned into "fat
liver" luxury appetizers. One of only two foie gras producers in the
U.S. is located in Sullivan County, New York.
Birds have literally exploded from these forced feedings. Necropsies
show ruptured livers, throat injuries, esophagus trauma, and food
spilling out of dead birds' nostrils. Ducks and geese live in terror
of these force-feeding ordeals. Their bodies become so deformed and
distended they can hardly walk.
Section 353 of Article 26 of the NY Agriculture and Markets Law
relating to Cruelty to Animals makes it a crime to torture or
unjustifiably injure, maim, mutilate, or kill any animal. Torturing
ducks and geese to produce a luxury food is clearly unjustifiable
within the meaning of this law.
