On Monday, February 19, 2007, three, possibly four, hens were thrown onto the basketball court from the stands at KSU’s Bramlidge Coliseum at a basketball game. They were alive when they were thrown onto the court over a distance of approximately thirty feet. They were wounded, and they could not get up on their legs. One of the hens appeared to have blood on her shoulder. Another photo shows four hens painted red and blue (the school colors) in a plastic tub, apparently before they were thrown.

The images show that these hens came from a battery-caged hen facility. They landed near the cheerleaders. The following two videos show a bit of what happened:

What Can I Do?

A letter from Assistant University Attorney Jacqueline R. Butler (2.22.07) to PETA states that Kansas State University has a policy that live animals are contraband and not allowed into University athletic events. “Anyone caught bringing contraband items into a University venue or throwing any object at the playing area during one of our Athletics contests is subject to ejection from the facility and applicable penalty of law. . . .. Due to Monday’s events, the University is again reviewing its procedures to help prevent such events in the future.”

1) Please urge that this policy be strictly enforced and tell the University that mistreating chickens and other animals is unacceptable and reflects very badly on the school. Request a written reply.

Please speak up on behalf of these totally sad and mistreated hens who never harmed anyone and whose entire life has been one of human-created misery and abuse from the battery cage to the basketball court. Thank you.
