Dear Mr. McCabe:
I am writing respectfully to ask your office to prosecute Bonnie Nave, the Pinellas County woman who’s been charged with cruelty to animals for allegedly kicking a mother duck several times so that her dogs could kill a duckling on September 1, 2019. Witnesses say they saw Nave’s two dogs maul the duckling to death while Nave watched.
It appears Nave’s conduct in this incident constitutes cruelty to animals under Florida statute 828.12, which states that (1) a person who unnecessarily mutilates, or kills any animal, or causes the same to be done, commits animal cruelty; and (2) a person who intentionally commits an act to any animal, or who owns or has custody or control of any animal and fails to act, which results in the cruel death, or excessive or repeated infliction of unnecessary pain or suffering, commits aggravated animal cruelty.
By kicking the mother duck out of the way so that her dogs could kill the duckling, Bonnie Nave appears to have acted in an illegally cruel manner toward two animals under Florida’s Cruelty to Animals law: her actions resulted in the cruel death of the duckling and in an excessive and repeated infliction of unnecessary pain and suffering on the mother duck.
I speak for many people who want to see Nave’s cruelty to the mother duck and her duckling prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. It’s important for the community to see that violating Florida’s Animal Cruelty law has significant consequences and will not be tolerated.
Thank you very much for your attention to this letter. I look forward to your response.
