Speakers :

Sarahjane Blum, media director for GourmetCruelty.com, a grassroots coalition dedicated to exposing the truth about the cruel delicacy of foie gras, through undercover investigation, open rescue, and educational outreach.

Virgil Butler, former Tyson chicken slaughterhouse worker in Grannis, Arkansas, whose testimony about the horrible conditions at Tyson and ongoing website revelations were featured in a front-page article in the Los Angeles Times , "A Killing Floor Chronicle," Dec. 8, 2003.

Terry Cummings, codirector of Poplar Spring Farm Animal Sanctuary, whose visit to Springfield Farm, a free-range turkey farm in Sparks, Maryland, showed how these turkeys actually live.

Cheri Ezell-Vandersluis, a former dairy goat farmer, and now the director of Maple Farm Sanctuary in Mendon, Massachusetts, had an eye-opening experience that changed her life forever.

Mary Finelli, Farmed Animal Advocacy Consultant and former Editor of Farmed Animal Watch.

Lester Friedlander , DVM, former chief veterinary USDA Meat Inspector at the largest hamburger production plant in the country, was one of the first veterinarians in the U.S. to study tapes of what BSE-infected cows look like. He was fired by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for speaking out on 48 Hours (CBS) and Prime Time Live (ABC).

Michael Greger, M.D., Mad Cow Coordinator for the Organic Consumers Association and Chief BSE Investigator for Farm Sanctuary, is the author of "The Killer Among Us" and many other articles on human and animal health issues.

Pattrice Jones, co-director of the Eastern Shore Sanctuary & Education Center and coordinator of the Global Hunger Alliance, lives and learns from chickens and chicken "growers" in the heart of Delmarva poultry country.

Jim Mason, co-author of Animal Factories and author of An Unnatural Order , worked undercover as an artificial inseminator at a ConAgra turkey breeding operation in Missouri and is now working on a new book.

Paul Shapiro, campaigns director for Compassion Over Killing, a nonprofit animal advocacy organization whose work on behalf of farmed animals has been featured in the New York Times, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle, and Baltimore Sun , among other media outlets. As a COK investigator, he has documented the conditions for animals in factory farms, livestock auctions, and slaughter plants.

It is 1 block east of the main peninsula highway, Lankford Hwy, Rt 13.

The following motels are within 5-10 minutes of United Poultry Concerns on Virginia's Eastern Shore. All are on Route 13, the main highway. UPC is one block east on Seaside Road. Cape Charles is 12 miles south of Machipongo. Nassawadox and Exmore are 5 - 8 miles north of Machipongo.

Directions to United Poultry Concerns : From Norfolk, come across the bridge. Drive 20 min. on Rt 13 North to the B & B convenience store & Chevron Station on the right. There, turn right onto Machipongo Rd. You'll cross the railroad tracks and pass the little post office on the right. Go about a mile. Turn left onto Seaside Rd (Rt 600). Ours is the first house on the right just a few yards north of Webb's Island Rd, which is marked. Look for a white house that sits back from the road. 1 hour.

From Maryland & Northern VA, take the Washington beltway to Rt 50 East. Cross the Bay Bridge. Drive through Salisbury, MD and get on Rt 13 South towards Norfolk. Stay on Rt 13 South for about 75 miles until you see the B & B store. Follow the above directions to our house. 4 hrs.

From Richmond, take Interstate 64 East. After passing the exits to Norfolk International Airport, take the next exit onto Northampton Blvd to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. Go across the bridge. Keep going straight. Northampton Blvd is/becomes Rt 13 North. Follow the above directions to the new home of United Poultry Concerns. 2/12 hrs.

Airport: Norfolk International . Take 64 East to Northampton Blvd North (Rt 13 North) & cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Drive 20 minutes up Rt 13. Follow the directions above to get to UPC. A 1-hour drive. (Bridge Toll: $10)
