The Second Annual Conscious Eating Conference
will inform attendees about the true nature of sustainable food choices. There’s a growing awareness of food and its relationship to our planet, our
communities, our health, and the animals who share our planet. As we face unprecedented global challenges from climate change to food deserts, we realize
that agriculture plays a crucial role in these challenges and that it is our responsibility to make informed and conscious choices. Discussion will focus
on issues surrounding backyard chicken-keeping, small-scale farming, “eating local,” animal-free farming, sanctuary experience, and vegan
living as alternatives to the agribusiness model of food production and animals.

Conscious Eating Conference Presentation Summaries
9:00 - 9:50 am
The Ultimate Betrayal: Is There Happy Meat?
Presented by Hope Bohanec
This informative presentation, based on the book of the same name, lifts the veil of secrecy surrounding “alternative” animal farming. It is
now popular to express that your eggs are cage-free and that your meat is organic. But is this trend really the answer to the plentiful problems of raising
animals for food? Is there really happy meat? This presentation offers answers to these critical questions. (www.the-ultimate-betrayal.com)
Hope Bohanec
has been active in animal protection and environmental activism for over 20 years and her first book
The Ultimate Betrayal: Is There Happy Meat? will be out in June.
Hope offered her organizational talents as the Campaigns Director at In Defense of Animals, got the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to pass a VegDay
Resolution, was the Sonoma County Coordinator for Proposition 2, and co-founded the Sonoma County based Compassionate Living Outreach.
10:00 – 10:50 am
The Emotional World of Farmed Animals:
What Sanctuaries are Showing Us
Presented by Kim Sturla
Can you decipher from a pig’s grunt if she is annoyed or friendly? Were you aware that even chickens sometimes are less than honest with their flock mates?
Do you know which farmed animal has the reputation of being the most curious? The intimacy sanctuary workers have with cows, sheep, pigs, and chickens
parallels what many have with companion dogs and cats. Learn about the rich emotional lives of animals most think of only as food. (www.animalplace.org)
Kim Sturla
is the Executive Director of Animal Place–a sanctuary for farmed animals that she co-founded in 1989. Animal Place has its 600-acre sanctuary in
Grass Valley and a 60-acre Rescue Ranch shelter in Vacaville. Sturla has been a central figure in the animal rights movement for more than 30 years.
Kim is the resident Pig Whisperer, able to communicate beautifully with even the wiliest of pigs! She shares her home and life with dogs Ralph and
Marty.

How We Find Our Way to a Humane and Environmentally Sane Future
Presented by Will Anderson
Conscious eating is just one of several essential behaviors required to achieve a humane and environmentally sane future. Social and economic justice, a
reduction in human populations, and economic systems that nourish ecosystems also are required to stop the loss of biodiversity while increasing the chance
for any semblance of sustainability. We will examine how veganism is interdependent with these issues. (www.greenvegans.org)
Will Anderson
After founding Greenpeace Alaska in 1978, Will continued his long career in the environmental and animal protection professions for Earth Island
Institute, Maine Animal Coalition, Progressive Animal Welfare Society, Animal Welfare Institute, Earth Justice, and now Green Vegans. He was selected
for the Animal Advocates Oral History Project, now catalogued at Columbia University. Starting as a vegetarian in 1968, Will evolved to veganism. His
new book,
This Is Hope: Green Vegans and the New Human Ecology is available now. (www.ThisIsHopetheBook.com)

Is Backyard Chicken-Keeping an Ethical Alternative to Factory Farming?
Presented by Karen Davis, PhD
Backyard chicken-keeping has benefited chickens as people who previously knew them only as food discover how delightful chickens are as living creatures.
However, it has also attracted people who mistreat their birds, fostered a bustling chick hatchery business fostering factory-farm cruelties, and animal
shelters and sanctuaries are inundated with unwanted chickens. Karen will discuss the pros and cons of keeping backyard chickens, what chickens need for
happiness and wellbeing, and suggestions if you are considering or already have a backyard flock. (www.upc-online.org)
Karen Davis, PhD
is the President and Founder of United Poultry Concerns. She is the author of several books including Prisoned Chickens, Poisoned Eggs: An Inside Look
at the Modern Poultry Industry and More Than a Meal: The Turkey in History, Myth, Ritual, and Reality. Award-winningly profiled in The Washington Post
for her outstanding work for the birds, Karen maintains a sanctuary for chickens on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.
